Christ is concerned that we not just be saved but also live out our faith and walk in a manner worthy of Him. As Christians we want and need to grow spiritually and be equipped. Otherwise our faith will be without works in this life. “Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself” (James 2:17, NASB). It is our duty and responsibility, therefore, to equip ourselves and assist the church in being equipped for good works too!
Since we love Christ, we are concerned not only with what happens to His church, but also with what goes on in the society around us. Both exist in the same world together even though the church is not “of this world” but was created by Christ. We face obstacles to living our faith in the form of the schemes and philosophies of men every day precisely because they are “of this world.” If we have our lives made right by being redeemed through Christ, then helping others be set free from this world comes next. This cannot be done without engaging the culture. “Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints” (Jude 1:3, NASB). This is a direct call to action for all the faithful to get ready and actively engage our culture by defending the faith.
